My name is Bruno Amaral. I recently re-built my desktop and decided to use the experience to arm myself with all kinds of free programs. My goal was to answer the question of open-source Vs commercial software once and for all...while cutting down the cost of software.
My name is Ryan Smyth. What I do for a living is a bit hard to pin down to a title, but I've settled on the title "Evangelist" for my day-job. Basically, I do software marketing for a software company here in Korea.
Dick Bryant is the owner of Open Window Software, which has been producing quality software products since the early 1980s. Read about what this computer professional has on his desktop and what some of his favorite programs are.
I'm William Daniels and I'm a programmer for one of the major automakers. I've been using computers for about 18 years.
Stacy Reed reviews software for Tucows and recently graduated with honors from Baker College of Flint where she studied Graphics and Web Design. See what she keeps on her desktop.
Over the last three months we've had computer professionals tell you about their computer systems and I've gotten lots of e-mail about the What's On MY Desktop? column. This article collects and summarizes the programs that ranked the highest among professional users.
I am Brandon Staggs, the author of all of the programs sold by Akamai Software. I've been a hopeless computer addict since I received a Commodore 64 as a Christmas present when I was nine years old. The Commodore 64 had a built-in operating system that gave a comforting, glowing "READY" prompt when you switched it on. Even at that early age I enjoyed reading technical manuals, and dove into the programming book that came with the computer and taught myself how to program on it.
My name is Melaina Allen. For several years, I worked as an administrative assistant for a non-profit organization. These days, I'm a stay-at-home mom to a beautiful two-year-old girl, and my husband and I are expecting twins this winter. I still try to keep my skills sharp by doing some freelance editing and formatting from home.
My name is Gary Elfring and I own Elfring Fonts, Inc., a software and font development company incorporated in 1979. I built my first Z80 based computer in 1975 from a kit. (The Digital Group Group- and yes that was the name, not a typo.) It came with no operating system, so I input data from toggle switches. When the CP/M operating system came out and I wrote and sold the CP/M bios for this particular brand of computer. I wrote my first game for CP/M and distributed it on the very first BBS that could handle downloads. (It was a complete failure.)
I'm Sharon Housley, I've been involved in Internet Marketing since 1996 and I've been in the computer industry since 1989. I currently manage marketing for NotePage, Inc. and am personally responsible for over 100 websites. My introduction computers began in 6th grade with a tutorial program called Step by Step and evolved into BASIC programming in High School. I've always been comfortable with computers, but I have not always been comfortable with the technical aspects of computers.
My name is Harold Holmes and I'm a computer programmer by trade and my company is Lincoln Beach Software. I've been using computers for about 23 years. My first computer was a Tandy Color Computer with 64k of memory. I think it ran OS/9 but I'm not 100% sure. My favorite work related program would have to be Delphi! I don't play many games but I do like Rainbow 6/Tom Clancy, and Roller coaster Tycoon.
The first PC I used was a TRS-80 Model 1, back around 1980, and I credit that machine with starting my life on a very unexpected path. DOS was my first operating system, and I still like to drop out to a command prompt now and then to get a few things done fast. Naming my favorite work-related program is nearly impossible, since my needs and preferences change constantly. Right now I like CuteFTP a lot. My favorite game is still Sim City 2000.
My name is Tom Guthery IV and I'm the president and founder of FLIX Productions. We specialize in computer animation and educational software that's animated. I've been using computers for 30 years and my first computer was a CompuAdd XT that used DOS. I guess my favorite work-related program of all time is 3D Studio Max and my favorite game program would be just about any kind of pinball program --- I don't like to think when I play a game.
I'm Michael E. Callahan and I'm better known all around the world under my trademarked name "Dr. File Finder". I first started reviewing software on-line in 1983. I've been doing marketing for software developers since 1986 and I'm currently also the Manager of Editorial Content at Tucows.
While most computers are pretty much the same, it's always interesting to see how people use them differently.
I'm Dan Veaner, a software developer and online publisher since 1989.
I'm Paul Mayer, the President of ZPAY Payroll Systems, Inc. and Vice President of Software Development for Infinisource, Inc. I've been a self-taught software developer since 1976 and am one of the early pioneers of Shareware. My first computer was a Heathkit H8, and I built my first six computers before they came out with the first IBM PC which I bought with serial number 0000000045.
