TuneUp Utilities 2006 is one of those programs that seems to have it all. It can clean useless files, repair the Registry, monitor Startup programs, optimize memory, defragment the Registry, undelete files, shred files so they can't be recovered, and more! It can do so much that I'll spend just a little time on each of the five sections and the functions they have.

Customize & Analyze

In this section you find four selections. With System Control you can change the way Windows looks and feels. Deal with animation, menus, folders, the taskbar, and lots more. The StartUp Manager gives you complete control over all the programs that load automatically when Windows starts. You might be surprised to see some of the things that start. You can disable entries or even delete them. If you want you can even add programs that you might like to have start with Windows. Al sounder this section is System Information that tells you all about your system and its resources. Lastly, the TuneUp Styler lets you change the way Windows looks through the use of "skins", backgrounds,and more.

Cleanup & Repair

In this section the Disk Cleaner finds all of the junk on your computer and lets you remove it quickly and easily. It locates Internet files, zero-byte files, temporary files, and other useless things on the hard drives you indicate. Also in this section is the RegistryCleaner. It analyzes every section of the Windows Registry, finds any problems, and fixes them. Really slick!

Optimize & Improve

In this section you'll find TuneUp MemOptimizer. This module frees up memory so your computer runs better. Better yet, it runs in the background so it can keep things running smoothly. It puts an icon in the system tray so you can see your memory status. Another cool option is the RegistryDefrag which compresses your Windows registry so it's more efficient. I've had times when it was able to reduce the size of the Registry by 10%! The final option in this section is the System Optimizer. Talk about cool, this analyzes your system and makes recommendations on ways to make things run better.

It finds things under areas like display, system, and security that might be improved. For example, lowering color depth can improve your performance. It will also tell you if particular programs are using large amounts of memory. If you like you can follow the recommendations and TuneUp Utilities 2006 will make the changes for you. The program can also optimize your Internet connection so you get maximum performance when you're online. Well done!

Administer & Control

In this section you'll find some tools like the Registry Editor.This handy tool makes it easy to find things in the Windows Registry.The Process Manager lets you see all of the programs that are currently running, similar to the Windows Task Manager. You can also see exactly how much memory each process is using. The Uninstall Manager show you every program that's installed and makes it easy to uninstall them.

File Recovery & Destruction

The TuneUp Shredder deletes files and folders so they cannot be recovered. The method used is so thorough that once used there will be no traces left behind. In the same section you'll also find TuneUp Undelete which can help you to recover files that were accidentally erased.

Summing It Up!

TuneUp Utilities 2006 is a full-featured package of tools that helps you to keep your computer running smoothly. It can remove junk,clean and compress the Registry, optimize the computer and the Internet,recover lost files, and blast files out of existence. It helps you to customize both the look and feel of Windows. You can edit the Registry, see what programs start with Windows, end processes that are hogging memory, and so much more! Over the years I've looked at lots of packaged utilities, but this is the best I've seen. It has an intuitive user interface, it's easy-to-use, and it has an excellent help system.
