Greetings and Welcome! I'm always gladwhen you can stop by to check out my software Picks for the week. We're closing in on the endof April and I still can't believe we had a snow storm in Colorado inthe middle of April. I know plants and flowers need lots of moisture, but in general snow doesn't agree with them. Oh well, mustn't grumble too much about the weather. The snow did encourage me tostay inside and look at more software. I've picked out some really goodsoftware titles that I hope you'll like. So, if you're all set just sitback, relax, and lets take a look.

File Scavenger, by QueTek Consulting Corporationis a powerful tool for getting back files that you've accidentallydeleted. In testing it out I tried it under a range of conditions and itworked beautifully. What's really impressive is that FileScavenger can even recover files that have been emptied from therecycle bin. I also liked the fact that the program can be run from aremovable disc like a CD, DVD, or even a USB memory card.

File Scavenger works with network drives, NTFS compression, andmore. You can even use it on a disk that's been formatted. In all casesyou need to attempt recovery before data has been written to thedisk. For more on that see my commentary. If you're looking for a goodway to recover files you've accidentally deleted this may beexactly what you need. Check it out, I recommend it!

Comments PRN - While computers have gotten progressively more sophisticated hard drives are basically thesame. Oh sure they're faster and they hold more data, but overall theyhaven't changed much. Data is written onto the hard drive in sequentialorder. When you install a program think of it going down on the harddrive like row of blocks. Now, if you remove that same programand install a bigger one, the new one will overwrite the blocks the oldprogram had occupied and some new ones. All this addition andsubtraction leads to fragmentation, but it also plays a part in datarecovery. Think about it. If you delete a file it free up blocks onthe hard drive. If you install something else or download a file, it'sgoing to cover up that spot and almost eliminate any chance of recovery. So, the instant you realize that you've accidentally deleted a file, forexample, is when you need to try to recover it. Don't wait and don't doanything else. That's why it's a good thing that File Scavengercan be run from a CD or DVD. That means you don't have to install theprogram onto a drive you're trying to save a file on. Remember, try torecover a file before you do anything else or your file isprobably gone for good.

PrivacyView Software, by PrivacyView Software takes atruly interesting and unique approach to Internet privacy. You'veall seen a flock of programs that erase your so-calledtracks from Internet surfing. These programs blast your Internethistory, wipe out cookies, and even the person doing the surfing doesn'tknow where they've been. Not PrivacyView. Instead it encrypts allyour Internet data so you can see it, but no one else can. Reallya much better approach.

PrivacyView lets you surf so you don't have to worry aboutwhere you've been. You can download photos, movies, or anything else andthese files are saved in an encrypted area. When you close the browserall of your surfing history and cookies are saved. So, whether you'revisiting adult Web sites or simply trying to buy a gift for someonewithout them finding your "tracks" in the history, PrivacyView isa great alternative. The program with erasing your tracks is thatit's inconvenient if want to go back. PrivacyView keeps all ofyour surfing private.

PrivacyView removes the complications of having private Internetsurfing sessions. Next time you go back you have your history, yourcookies, your files, your pictures, and all related materials. Theprogram works beautifully and lets you save files in a handy folderstructure. You can also assign keywords so you can find the things youwant. PrivacyView takes a fairly common problem and in myopinion solves it. I like it so much that it's not only a Pick, but also a Dr. File Finder Favorite andthose are few and far between. So, if you'd like to surf the 'net andkeep it private, try PrivacyView. I recommend it.

TreeSize Professional, by JAM Softwareis a cool tool for managing your disk space. What I really like about itis the ability to visually display the information. The programhas some very cool pie charts as well as 3D bar charts that really showyou which folders are using the most disk space.

The screen shot shows you what one of the bar charts looks like. Reallypretty slick. TreeSize Professional lets you see how much spaceis used and how much space is wasted. The program is very easy-to-useand intuitive, perfect for users with all levels of experience. Intesting it out I also found that it's very fast! I was impressedwith how quickly the program could process information. Another nicefeature is the ability to generate reports that you can print out orexport in a variety of file formats including HTML. Find out where allyour disk space is going and get other information as well. Checkit out, I recommend it.

KnowledgeWorkshop, by Learning ManagementSolutions is one of those programs that I just had to look at.The description was just eye-catching and this is no "ordinary" program. To begin with it's a Web browser and it has all the standard thingsyou'd expect in a browser. At the same time, it's also a task managerwhich you can use to keep yourself on track. The program also serves asa word processor and it maintains a database where you can keep alot of information. This is the kind of program that can be usedat home and at work. In fact, there are three versions -- Professional,Plus, and Personal, to suit your needs exactly. It has an easy-to-useand intuitive user interface, which makes it perfect for users with alllevels of experience. It has excellent help, online tutorials, and more. This program is loaded with features and functions, so I'm just going totry to hit the high points for you.

With KnowledgeWorkshop you can have a central program for keepingthings organized. Use it to manage data, personal information, projects, and much more. It would be a great tool for anyone doing research orwho's in school. You can create "subjects" and then "topics" that relateto those topics. You can then have items that are associated with thosetopics. You can even have topics that are created automatically whenthings are added to specific folders. Cool. In a home setting it can beused to keep your household on schedule. Use it to store all of yourhome-related Web links like links to stores, software sites, and more. This is an impressive product. Believe me when I say that justwhat the Web browser can do is worth the price! You can save Webpages as a topic, highlight key text, gray out text you don't want tosee, and even insert annotations. Slick -- beyond slick!

KnowledgeWorkshop can be used to read newsgroups -- a powerfulfeature all by itself. I subscribed to a number of newsgroups anddownloaded the messages. You can mark a discussion as "read" tell theprogram to "ignore" certain discussions, and more. This program doesso much that I could write pages about it. Heck, I'm not evendone testing every feature. You can drag and drop files into yourtopics, drag portions of Web pages, and even have associations to filesthat are on your hard disk. Import and export data, write notes withfull formatting, maintain your schedule, and encrypt your data to keepit secure. Wow!

KnowledgeWorkshop, by Learning ManagementSolutions is perhaps the most impressive product I'velooked at this year. Perfect for home, business, and school. Absolutelyloaded with excellent features. It's a browser, word processor, taskmanager, newsgroup reader, and so much more. This is one program thatI'm going to have to buy and you owe it to yourself to give it a try. Ithas great help, online tutorials, and a great interface. I like it somuch that it's not only a "Pick", it's a Dr. FileFinder Favorite and those are few and far between. Take thetime to look at KnowledgeWorkshop -- I recommend it highly!
