In my quest to find ways to do things better and more efficiently I tried lots of options. I've done a two-part editorial series on Gmail and also a two-part editorial series on Tucows Webmail. To present you with even more information, and more options, I'm going to also tell you about Yahoo Small Business Email. This week I'm going to talk about some of the fantastic extras you get with Yahoo! Small Business Email and next week I'll cover dealing with your actual email. This powerful, Web-based email solution comes in a couple of flavors. If you only need one email account for your business you can get the Custom Mailbox option for just $34.95 a year. Or, if you think you'll need a bit more you can sign-up for the Business Mail package and start out with ten (10) custom email addresses. This package is available for only $9.95 per month and for just $11.95 a month you can get Web site with unlimited pages as well. Yahoo! offers you unlimited storage which means you're never going to run out of space for your email. They also allow file attachments that can be as large as 20 megabytes. There's lot more to like about Yahoo! Small Business Email, so let's take a deeper look.

Features Galore

If you're looking for a complete package you can purchase your domain right from Yahoo! and start fresh. Or, if you already have a domain you can bring it to Yahoo! as well. To really test the Yahoo! Small Business Email system I came with my main, business domain in hand, and set it up. I wasn't disappointed. The online help that's available is really excellent, but that's not all. You also get 24-hour telephone support. That's right, you get to call and talk with real people who really known what they're talking about. I didn't want to replace my existing Web pages, but I worked with the Yahoo! interface just to see how it was. Wow, it was easy! The interface was intuitive and very easy-to-use, perfect for users with all levels of experience. You go step-by-step through a process that's been made eloquently simple. Pick a design, choose your layout, put in your text and graphics, and you're done. Over the years I've looked at lots of HTML editors and solutions for creating Web sites and this is one of the nicest I've seen. It doesn't make assumptions about what you know, it just lays it out for you in easy-to-follow steps. Perfect. So, if you need a Web site along with email, this is a great solution. Now, to some of the email features.

For top-of-the-line protection your Yahoo! Small Business Email is protected by Norton AntiVirus full-time. Email going out and coming in is scanned thoroughly to make sure no creepy crawlies invade your computer. And, Norton protection is included with your account.

Now, to protect you from the bane of email everywhere, your Yahoo! email account is protected by SpamGuard Plus. I was impressed with how much SPAM this solution dealt with right from the start. The longer I used it the smarter it got and within a short time very little junk email ever made it to my inbox. Good enough for me and I was handling all the email from my four main email accounts, but more on that later.

Another feature you get included in your package is DomainKeys a system established by Yahoo to protect you from online scams and phishing attempts. Just another layer to help keep you secure while you're doing business. Slick.

Yahoo! Small Business Email also gives your email the power of filters! You can create filters to redirect email, put email in certain folders, and lots more. Filters are a huge benefit if you deal with lots of email. Another feature is the ability to block certain email domains and send those messages right into the garbage pile. This gives you lots of power in dealing with pesky spammers and others.

There are other functions and tools that help you while you're doing email like "auto complete" of email addresses as you begin to type them in. I'm going to cover all the things dealing directly with email in part two.
