Since its inception in 1985, the .com domain extension has been the largest of Internet domain extensions. How large? Of the 223 million domains registered across all TLDs (Top Level Domains), 120 million or more are .coms.  While domain extensions such as .net and .org have undoubtedly risen in popularity over the years, .com will continue to be the domain of choice well into the future. Here are some reasons why .com is still the hottest domain in the market for businesses all over the world:

Reputation
The .com domain extension has historically been the most used domain of all TLDs. Since the very first .com domain in 1985 (Symbolics.com), this domain has come to be known as the most respected and trusted TLD out there. Since 2009, renewal rates have been up 3% to 74% in Q1 2012. On an international scale, .com remains the #1 domain extension for businesses and brands.

The Default Domain
Most of us can admit to assuming a .com suffix for a business we’re trying to find on the Internet. .Com is memorable and is likely the first extension you’d use to locate a company online. By using domains other than .com, you run the risk of losing a visitor simply because they cannot locate your site easily or end up at a different site.

The Market’s Hot
When it comes to eventually selling your domain in the aftermarket (if you choose to do so), the .com domain will get you a better selling price. The average selling price from January 2011 to present for a .com Hover premium domain is $1,308 compared to $927 for .net and $1,217 for .org.

While it’s undeniable that the number of available .com domains are dwindling (all two and three-letter .com domains are already spoken for), you can still secure a great .com domain for a great price. In fact, .coms start at $15 per year with Hover. .Com is the industry standard domain extension and it’s not slowing down. While other TLDs continue to enter the marketplace, .com’s strong position in the international marketplace is sure to carry forth into the future.
