Copying songs and playlist to ipods, taking notes, and HTML validation

I've been getting quite a bit of e-mail from users like you asking me about the software I use from day to day. So, this week, I'll tell you about a few of the programs I use when I'm creating my Picks. I hope you'll find it useful and informative. So, if you're all set, let's take a look.

I've been getting quite a bit of e-mail from users like you asking me about the software I use from day to day. So, this week, I'll tell you about a few of the programs I use when I'm creating my Picks. I hope you'll find it useful and informative. So, if you're all set, let's take a look.

CSE HTML Validator, by AI Internet Solutions, Inc. is a really slick tool that anyone can use to check the accuracy of their HTML code. I mean, let's face it, we all make mistakes. When doing Web pages with HTML all it takes is a missing ">" and you can have an entire page in bold text. I use HTML code in my Picks to add a little color or to add emphasis to certain words. In the truest sense, HTML, or HyperText Markup Language, is like a simple form of programming. No, it doesn't "run" like a program, but it does allow you to tell a Web page how to act. When to center a line or paragraph, when to put in a horizontal rule, where to make some text italic, bold or even underlined. The thing is that you have to be precise. CSE HTML Validator helps you to be letter perfect every single time.

CSE HTML Validator doesn't just find the errors for you, it also lets you fix them. Using the integrated HTML editor, you can actually create HTML documents from scratch, and repair the existing ones the program finds any problems with. Recently I realized that the template I use for the Picks has been fiddled with by about 10 different people. So, I used CSE HTML Validator on it and wow, what a surprise. It found all kinds of HTML syntax errors, pointed out things that were wrong as well as just giving me warnings about some questionable HTML code. The program is very fast and extremely easy-to-use. To me that makes it perfect for both new and experienced users. It's a great tool for experienced Webmasters, but it is also great for people who are new to HTML. It finds your mistakes, but it also tells you what is correct. Really slick. It seems like every time I use CSE HTML Validator I learn something new about HTML coding.

CSE HTML Validator has a lot of configurable options and that makes it very flexible. It even has an alphabetical drop-down section that inserts all the various pairs of codes for you! Very nice! There are several different versions: the Lite version is FREE, and there's also a Standard and a Professional version. The Professional version even lets you customize many of the validator messages. It also lets you change a warning message into an error message. Great for customizing the program to be just how you want it. I like this product so much that it's not only a Pick, but it's a Dr. File Finder Favorite, and those are few and far between. So, if you're looking for a program to go through your Web pages and help you find any errors, take a good look at CSE HTML Validator. It's what I use and I recommend it!

NoteTab Pro, by Fookes Software is a text and HTML editor that's won multiple awards. It has won the SIAF People's Choice Awards and also the Shareware Industry Awards. That makes it a favorite with both users and professionals. The program is extremely easy-to-use and very intuitive. It is simply loaded with features and functions. The interface is intuitive, so both new and experienced users will find it useful. I know I do. All the text I write is written in this excellent program, including these Picks. Often, even things that will eventually end up in Microsoft Word are written in NoteTab Pro because I find it fast and easy. I write the text in NoteTab and then later I just paste it into Word for formatting and the like.

NoteTab Pro gives you all the tools you need to do a great job. It can load large files, handle HTML code, spell check what you write, and gives you a thesaurus to find new words. You can create bookmarks, change cases, create powerful "clips", and the tabbed interface lets you have multiple documents open at one time. Right now I have 9 open and they are all accessible with just a click of the mouse. On top of all that, it has a powerful search function so you can find things, replace text and more. So, if you are looking for a powerful text and HTML editor, this is the best you're going to find! And don't just take my word for it -- it's the choice of software developers and users alike! Something I use every day!

FILEhand Search, by Filehand, LLC. is a neat little tool for searching the countless files you have on your computer. The program is fast, simple and very easy-to-use. The interface is intuitive and uncluttered. You can tell the program what kind of files you want to be able to search, like Powerpoint, Word, HTML, text and the like. FILEhand Search indexes files on your computer so you get virtually instant results. I have to say, I was impressed and at this point in my life I don't get impressed very easily by software. Plus, for all you music fans, it'll even search your computer for MP3 files.

FILEhand Search lets you pick what folders you'd like to have indexed. So, for example, say you're looking for a text file and you keep all your text files in certain folders. You can go in and eliminate folders that you know don't contain TXT files. The program indexes your files and it's really fast! Type in a word and, viola!! It's there. Every file within your parameters that has that word is listed, instantly. Really, it's that quick. This product uses the .NET technology from Microsoft, and if this program is any indication of what .NET can do, then I'm a believer.

Note that FILEhand Search is only available for Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Also, for those who will want to try this product, you may need to install the .NET framework first. Some machines with Windows 2000 and XP have it already installed.

Do a search with FILEhand Search and the results show you the direct path to the file, a percentage ranking of how it relates to the search criteria and part of the text. This is without even using the advanced search which lets you search for an exact phrase, for files modified on certain dates, and you can even specify the size of the displayed extract! EXCELLENT!

FILEhand, by Filehand, LLC., is a powerful tool for searching through the thousands of files on your computer. Over the years I've looked at just about every search tool available, and this beats them all. It beats the tool I've been using. Heck, this is like having Google on your PC. You can search through a wide range of file types, do detailed, advanced searches, do a "quick query" and lots more. Type in something you're looking for and POW, you've found it! So, if you find yourself looking for things on your PC, and you'd like a program to help you, look no further! This is one of the best I've seen. Try it! Version 3.0 is now available.

GetRight, by Headlight Software, Inc. is a tool that I've used for quite some time. If you download anything off the Internet, you should use it too! File sizes just keep getting bigger and bigger. What do you do if you're downloading a 40 megabyte file and your power goes out? Or your computer freezes up? Or you get disconnected from the Internet? You start over, that's what! Well, not when you're using GetRight! With this in place you can resume downloads that have stopped. And they start back up right where you left off! Very slick and also very handy! The program also lets you pause a download so you can start it up again at a later time. Nicely done, but there's lots more!

GetRight can also be used to schedule downloads for a later time. So, say you're wandering around the Internet and spy a file you want. Put it in your schedule and move on, and schedule as many downloads as you want. Later, at a time you determine, GetRight can dial the Internet, download the files you've selected, and then log off!! How cool is that? VERY! Heck, if you want, it can ever turn your computer off! Another neat feature of the program is that it can divide a large file into sections and divide different sections from different servers. That may sound odd but it can really increase the speed that files download as compared to downloading the entire file from one server. GetRight can also keep track of passwords for you, let you browse FTP sites easily, and it integrates beautifully with Netscape, Internet Explorer, Firefox and Opera. Perfect!

GetRight, by Headlight Software, Inc., is a powerful tool for managing downloads and is ideal no matter what your level of experience. I use it daily and often I'm download 5 files at a time -- for more on that read the Comment PRN below. So, if you're on the Internet, and you download files, take at look at GetRight. I give it my highest recommendation!

Comments PRN - I'm sometimes asked, "Have you really evaluated over 200,000 programs?" The answer is, yes! Another question is, "How do you keep track?" It all started in the very early days of shareware. There weren't many programs and I was reviewing quite a few, posting my reviews on the early bulletin board systems. My late friend, Bob Wallace, who coined the term "shareware," was joking with me about how many programs I'd looked at. So, just for fun, he wrote me a little program that updates (increments) a number in a file. Each time I review a program I trigger that little program and it updates the number in the file. So, I always know exactly how many programs I've looked at over the years. As of today it's 215,493. And, I've actually downloaded all but a very few. When I wrote "Dr. File Finder's Guide To Shareware" some authors sent me disks, but other than that I prefer to download all the programs I look at. I guess that quite possibly I've downloaded more data than any other individual. And I've had a great time doing it too. -- Doc

Tradewinds 2 is an adventure game that you can play in different ways. Your goal is to accumulate a fortune so you can upgrade your ship. The trick is in how to do that. You can trade in contraband and make more money, but you also risk your contraband being seized. As you upgrade your ship you can engage in battles with pirates and take all their gold - if you win. Another way to play is by taking the safe route and stick to trading regular goods. A couple of ways to play -- but don't wait for me. I'll do my full review sometime soon, but you can look at it NOW. Check it out!

iPodCopy is a slick little program I've looked at that makes it easy for copying songs and playlists from your iPod to iTunes. What I thought was really slick is that I could use iPodCopy to play music through a computer that didn't even have iTunes on it. Impressive. It will also copy songs and playlists right to your PC. In my testing so far it works great, but I want to spend a little more time with it before I do a full review. Don't wait for me. If you have an iPod download this baby and check it out.

Well, that's all we have time for today. I hope you enjoyed reading about these shareware programs that I use each and every day. And I also hope you'll take the time to try them out for yourself. All of them are excellent and well worth your time. Check out the Quick Picks too.
