In The Spotlight: Actual Title Buttons

by Michael Tretyakov of Actual Tools

As a programmer, I found that I spent a great deal of time on thecomputer and that very often I was irritated the way certain programsbehaved. It seemed that program windows always appeared in the wrongplace. They would be in the wrong portion of the screen and wouldobstruct important information. This meant I had to stop what I wasdoing and move these windows somewhere else on my desktop. No, thisdoesn't take a lot of time, but when you have to do it over and overperhaps 50 times a day it gets tedious. Not to mention the fact that itbroke my concentration. I decided to do something about it.

In the autumn of 2001 I organized Actual Tools, an interactivesoftware company, focused on developing desktop enhancement applicationsthat would make working on the computer more productive, enjoyable , andeasy.

First of all, I made a list of actions that were useful for me. Thislist consisted of the following:

  • Minimize to Tray - very often I launched multiple utilitiesor applications which I used only rarely, but these applicationsoccupied space in the Windows taskbar. So, the taskbar was clutteredwith different applications and it was rather difficult to quickly finda specific one quickly. By minimizing some applications to tray ithelped to save space in the taskbar. These minimized applications werealways easy to access as small icons in the system tray.
  • Stay on Top - was the ability for a program to stay on topof other program and it is one of my favorite features. It lets you seethe windows that contain important information.
  • Transparent Windows - is another nice feature because itlets you see information in other windows without having to actuallyswitch between them. It made working more convenient.

I then began to think about the most simple and convenient way to enableand disable these functions. Looking at programs on my monitor, Inoticed that there is always generally some space in the standardWindows "title bar." That's the top section of a program where theprogram name normally resides along with the buttons to minimize, restore, and close a program. To me this seemed like the best place toput additional buttons with new functions. Every person who works withWindows is already familiar with standard buttons and it wouldn't be aproblem to get used to new ones. So, that is how the idea of the firstActual Tools program, Actual Title Buttons, was born.

Working on the first version of Actual Title Buttons, we had to solvemany difficult technical problems, but all of these were overcome. InMay, 2002 Actual Title Buttons version 1.0 was released. Theprogram immediately gained a lot of fans all over the world. Many ofthese users wrote us with ideas and suggestions for improvements toActual Title Buttons.

And now, three years later, Actual Title Buttons version 3.7 canadd up to 8 new buttons on any window title bar. Commands include suchthings as Rollup, Resize, and Align. The program also has support for"hot keys." The staff of Actual Tools uses the software all the time. We've also included ideas and suggestions from actual users. I feel thatActual Title Buttons is an optimal solution for window controlthat can make work both easy and comfortable.

A fully functional 60-day trial version of Actual Title Buttons can bedownloaded absolutely for free, so everyone can experience all of thebenefits of our software. Actual Title Buttons runs under all versionsof Windows and costs only $19.95 (USD).
