According to Symantec, "OSX.Leap.A is a worm that targets installs of Macintosh OS X and spreads via iChat Instant Messenger program. For those who aren't sure what a worm is, you can check out a definition here. Luckily Symantec labels this worm as a low threat and easily removed. As of now, it's only affecting MacOS X 10.4. If you're pressed for time and looking to be rid of the worm, I'll provide you with the removal instructions that Symantec provides:

1. Delete the infected file

At the time of writing, the file infected by this worm has the following file name:
lastestpics
Delete this file. If this file has not been executed, no further action should be necessary.

2. Delete any associated file and restart the compromised computer

If the infected file has been executed, delete the following file:
/Users/[CURRENT USER]/Library/InputManagers/apphook.bundle
The compromised computer must then be restarted to remove the infection from memory.

Note:

  • {CURRENT USER} is the name of the user who was logged in when the infected file was executed.
  • The worm may infect other applications. If you suspect that an application has been compromised, it should be replaced from a clean backup copy.

Future Protection

As you can see, even Macintosh computers can be at risk for virus and worms. Be sure you're always keeping your computer protected, no matter what OS you happen to be running.

The removal, general worm information, and screen shot were obtained from Symantec Security Response.

About lward

I'm looking for a friend who likes...oh wait, wrong entry! Lindsey has worked for Tucows for a long time--August of 1999, to be exact. Minus a little down time in 2001, but we wont talk about that. As of now, she's working on maintaining the Mac side of the site, as well as giving everyone the hot movie wallpapers and screen savers that seem to be popular. When Lindsey is not at Tucows, she likes to enjoy her few-and-far-between off-times playing games, being with friends and family, and making sure her cat Sugar is getting the massive amount of attention he demands......ermm, deserves.
