Here are some explanations about the icons:

  • Kinara: A candle holder with seven candles. The Black candle is lit first. An additional candle is lit each day of Kwanzaa.
  • Mkeka: A mat upon which mazao and muhindi are placed.
  • Kibombe Cha Umoja: The Unity Cup. Everyone who takes part in the Kwanzaa celebration drinks from the Unity Cup.
  • Muhindi: Corn. One ear of corn is placed on the mkeka for each child in the household.
  • Mazao: Fruits and vegetables of the harvest.
  • Zawadi: Simple gifts of heritage objects or handcrafted items.
