Call to Power II
In this real-time overhead strategy title from Activision, you set out to build yourself a mighty empire.
This is the usual for overhead strategy games, but Call to Power II has an interesting twist. It allows you take command of most any empire from any civilization and see what would happen if... What would happen if the Egyptians had mastered atomic energy? What would happen if the Romans developed automobiles. What would happen if America lost World War II?
There are four ways to beat Call to Power II. You can conquer the world, you can attain world peace, you can reach a high score, or you can go for one of the science fiction victories. You can also lose, and quite easily.
The game calls you to juggle three equally important resources: food, production, and commerce. If any of these three resources starts get to low, you might as well turn off the game. Food affects your people's survival and ability to grow. Production is the amount of raw materials you have for building. Commerce represents your wealth and buying power. How you juggle these three resources is up to you, but these are the three vital elements in building a great empire.
Once a good sized empire is established, you can then develop your empire's: Exploration, Growth, Building, Conflict, Science, Trade, and/or Diplomacy. You can decide to build a super army and take over the world, or you can call for a peace treaty between all known nations and hold hands across the equator as you sing, "We are the World." You can focus on Science and become the most technologically advanced nation, or you can focus on commerce and become the wealthiest empire.
Call to Power II is perhaps the modern equivalent of Japanese Bonsai trees. You can control the growth and shape of it, you have to tend to its health, and you keep it over a long period of time, attempting to make it grow in the direction you want. Call to Power II is infinitely more detailed than gardening, however, with enough options, problems, tasks, and scope to make you stand back in awe.
