Pong has built-in mechanisms to avoid unnecessary pings from entering the system. It evaluates the format of the URL that the user enters and checks the HTTP response code at the location of the blog and feed URLs prior to forwarding any pings. Based upon feedback from representatives of nearly all of the Web services that are included in the application, a lock mechanism is incorporated in the application in order to prevent abuse of the ping system while still maintaining a responsive, functional application.
