Tucows Becomes A Certified Registrar for .CA Top Canadian-based registrar kicks off .ca registrations with list of retail partners

Toronto – September 18, 2000 – Tucows International Corp., the Canadian subsidiary of Tucows Inc., a leading distributor of e-business services and applications on the Internet and one of the top domain name registrars in the world, has been certified as a registrar of .ca domain names by the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA).

Starting today, CIRA will be allowing holders of existing .ca names to “pre-register” those names for renewal and all Canadian citizens and organizations to “advance register” new names. Tucows, operating strictly as a wholesale registrar, will make this process fast and easy for all Canadians by providing a list of its approved retail partners at This way users can easily continue to use their domain name service providers to secure their .ca names.

Tucows pioneered wholesale registration and revolutionized the domain name industry when it began selling .com, .net, and .org names in January 2000 through its Tucows OpenSRS registration service. Tucows has since made selling domain names easier and more profitable for over 4,000 Managed Service Providers (MSPs), including Internet Service Providers, Web hosting companies, and others, and, in turn, made buying domain names easier and more affordable for millions of end users.

Tucows officially expanded beyond .com, .net, and .org when it began offering the and country code top level domains (ccTLDs) on September 11. The .ca namespace is the next offering in what promises to be a large portfolio of ccTLDs.

Currently, there are only 90,000 .ca domain names registered. Under the existing rules, applicants have been required to have an incorporated company, a trademark, or offices in more than one province. Furthermore, applicants have only been allowed to register one domain name. However, with the new rules introduced by CIRA, current .ca name holders will be required to renew those names and any qualifying Canadian individual or organization will be able to register an unlimited number of .ca names. Tucows expects this to lead to a significant acceleration in .ca registrations.

“Tucows has become a leader in the global domain name registration space by understanding local markets and the importance of localized services. Having originated in Canada, we have particular knowledge of and enthusiasm for the Canadian market,” said Elliot Noss, president and CEO, Tucows Inc. ‚ÄúWe are pleased our services and our channel of Managed Service Providers will be helping thousands of Canadians, individuals and businesses establish themselves on the Internet.‚Äù
